Switching apps

Medisafe is paid now. Here’s a free alternative with no account

Since January 1, 2026, Medisafe needs a subscription for everyone outside the US. If you’re looking for a replacement, here is what to check, and how to move your medicines over in a few minutes.

What changed

According to Medisafe’s own help center, Medisafe became a fully paid app for users outside the United States on January 1, 2026. It now needs a subscription: $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year.

Before you switch, export your history. In Medisafe: Support and data management › Export data. Keep that file; it is your record up to today.

What to look for in a replacement

  • It rings while the phone is locked and saving battery, not only when the app is open.
  • It keeps the time you actually took each dose, not the time it was due.
  • It doesn’t need an account you’d have to trust with your medicines.
  • You can take your record with you, in a file you can open anywhere.
  • The price is plain: what is free, and what costs.

How to move in five minutes

  1. In Medisafe, export your history first and keep the file.
  2. Install Pillbean from Google Play. There is nothing to sign up for.
  3. Add each medicine: point the camera at the label, or type the name and pick the times.
  4. Choose how hard each one rings: gentle, insistent or critical.
  5. Run the 60-second self-test once, with the phone locked.

Get Pillbean on Google Play. Every alarm, the full history and the refill warnings are free, with no cap on medicines.

What Pillbean doesn’t do

  • There is no iPhone version yet.
  • It doesn’t alert a relative on another phone. Profiles live on the phone that rings.
  • It gives no medical advice and doesn’t check interactions.

Questions

Can I bring my Medisafe history into Pillbean?

Not directly. Keep Medisafe’s export for your records. Pillbean starts its own record from the day you add each medicine.

What do Pillbean’s extras cost?

Reminders, the record and refill warnings are free for good. Four extras (profiles, the visit report, tapers and awkward schedules, Drive backup) cost $3 a month with 3 days free, or $19 once. Google Play shows the price in your currency.
